summary on what my paper is about

30 04 2010

In conclusion, social media a tool for promoting a personal brand and getting a message out. A personal brand should be something useful and not a trashy, debauchery fest, as some people have their profiles, that could come back to haunt them. The Internet is a wide place and it is up to the user to create a rich experience that will not only benefit them but others as well. My personal brand is about entertainment, and news; two things I’ am learning in my major. The Internet is currently the best place to start a career and keep it going. The late 90’s and early 00’s saw a dot-com bust; this decade will probably see something similar if and when Faceback is replaced. But if users are savvy enough, that will not affect them. My blog will strive to bring people together, but it will be mostly aimed to a niche audience. That is one of the challenges because by the fourth year it is mostly aimed towards comic book fans, yet hosts an entertainment, and human-interest shows and games to entertain the non comic or casual fans. If the society cannot be united in real life, they can be united on the Internet though common interests and my site will strive to do that.
My strategy is a well thought out five-year plan that will help me keep organized and clear in what direction to take the website. It starts out as a single site and grows to include shows, Twitter accounts, contests, games, and fun. Someday people might not even own TVs’ or radios any more and the Internet will go to place for every time of entertainment need. My site will provide several types of shows and comics that help quench their entrainment thirst. Users need to be kept satisfied with constant new content, listening to their suggestions and concerns, and not spamming their mail boxes. The future looks bright for any one who seeks fame and notoriety on the web and their presence will be remembered as either a filth fest or a unique networking site. Being tech savvy is a critical skill in a media saturated world, and having a blog is an excellent way to stay connected and show case your skills. I still have a lot to learn in my studies and working on my personal brand will be apart of my education. I want to continue with my site because it has the potential to be something great and not just be another blip in a cyber map. As new technologies new and develop, so will my personal brand.

the future of social media

26 03 2010

i hate these of kinds where your asked to predict the future of something. but here it goes…

social media is expanding and growing fast with the rise and fall of networking sites,  ”flavor of the week” sites, and people living their lives on line. for the future of social media, i think their might be hyper local networking sites being popular with neighborhoods having their own networking sites that are used for reporting crime, invites for parties or get together, exchanging recipes, etc. i also think niche networking sites could be big where certain types of audiences (foodies, comicbook geeks, fetishes) with the same interests are together with other like-minded people,  instead of different crowds of people. facebook won’t stay at the top forever, because i think the next big thing is coming. twitter, for all we know, could evolve into a facebook like site because it already has the audience and is only going to get bigger.

whether you use it or not, social networking is here to stay. it is ingrained in daily culture and for some it has become second nature.

Understanding Online Business Models

17 03 2010

The Internet is savvy and smart way to advertise a product, start or expand a small business, or let the world know about a product and send them samples for free. An overview of Free by Chris Anderson explains that free was once a marketing gimmick, but now a full-fledged economy with lures of cheaper or free products only if something else is bought or to get the buyer to buy more products to make up for monies lost by the company.

Online business now can advertise their product and let the audience try a small sample for free. They key is get them hooked so they will continue buying the product. I think the business model that will be the most successful are the companies that offer free trial versions and then allow the user to cancel or become a member (Microsoft, Netflix, Napster). Or products people use everyday like toothpaste, soap, razors or food (Coke rewards, Ofree.net, ThunderFap.com).  A brilliant example of “hooked user” is Netflix. They have made a living beating the public over the head with constant pop up ads and commercials claiming one month free trial of DVDs delivered to your door. After the trial is over, the person can either cancel or become a paying member. What an idea. I was hooked after selecting the “3 DVDs at a time for $15 (plus tax)” deal and now I can watch my DVDs or watch an instant movie on the site. Netflix is a pretty good deal for both television and  movie watchers.
Independent sites such as http://www.shop4freebies.com,  offer free samples of products such as dog food, feminine products, or Poptarts. Sample sites are great for poor college students, travelers, or a company experimenting with a new product and letting the public know. Microsoft offers free downloads of Office for 60 days and at the end of the trial, the user can either uninstall Office and download another trial or by the product. Coke-a-Cole entices drinkers to by their sodas, become a member of MyCokerewards.com and save the codes under the caps to earn free stuff. These companies lure buyers into buy more of their stuff and to make for the money the company loses by “free stuff.”

Large corporations can easily make up for lost income from coupons and mass giveaways, but smaller business have a harder time recuperating. A smaller business will have to work harder or seek out investors to make their company grow as seen in the second Bubble video. Getting customers and getting the buyer interested in new or existing products is always challenging. That is why smaller companies hold contests, raffles, or offer free shipping. Take for example, a funny slogan shirt company. I don’t remember which one, but they have weekly contests to encourage people to submit pictures themselves wearing the product and whoever the winner is, gets a free shirt. Other companies have “buy 3 shirts, get 1 free” sales, “buy $50 worth of stuff and get free shipping” and “6 shirts for $10″ on some sites. Those are excellent ways to get new and existing customers to buy more stuff. At the same time, the company grows are more people see others wearing the product, though search engines, or browsing the net. A small company can grow and expand though the Internet. Online businesses should not let lack of funding hurt their conquests or let completion squash them. Online businesses have the help of the Internet to grow, expand, and offer products at reasonable prices to the world.

my first IPI newscast/LBV/TN

15 02 2010

radio:

In the Public Interest aired Sunday morning at 9 am. The theme was   Students in the Economy. My topic was what students are sacrificing in the economy.

I got great interviews from two  friends, a neighbor, and my boss. All of them mentioned stuff they gave up in the economy like eating out, shopping, Netflix, or gym memberships. They also gave tips to save like making meals at home,  car pooling, and waiting for sales. My neighbor said he didn’t give any thing up, but still tries to save money.

IPI airs Sundays at 9 am and re airs Tuesdays at noon.

tv:

I didn’t get to participate in season 3 premiere of LBV and the first epi of TN because I didnt finish editing my radio work. I spent the afternoon editing my story together, but I did do the CGs for LBV so it wasnt a total loss.

I also got  Super Bowl commercials comments for the entertainment section of LBV.

I think these air on Fridays. Need to check on that.
